Clive Cussler's character Dirk Pitt comes off even worse in this movie than Dr. Jones does in the Indiana Jones franchise. This movie is a caper and doesn’t have much good to teach except for a passion for the past.  Admiral Sandecker does speak about returning people’s culture to them but at the end we see that the Confederate gold, far from being given to a museum or some other institution, is stashed in the rebels’ village.  Our best hope for it is that it will go to pay for a better life for these poor people.  However that isn’t made clear at all.  The best that we can say is that Dirk Pitt is passionate about the past and does his research.
